17th Aviation Brigade
On 16 June 2005, the 17th Aviation Brigade was inactivated as part of a larger reorganization of US forces in Korea. 2nd Battalion, 52nd Aviation and the 164th Air Traffic Services Group were both reassigned to the 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade. The 1st Battalion, 52nd Aviation was reassigned to Task Force 49 at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
The 17th Aviation Brigade handled the bulk of the US Army’s routine cargo and other support flights in South Korea. The 17th Aviation Brigade was headquartered in Yongsan with the 1st Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment at K-16 Airfield; the 2nd Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment at Camp Humphreys; and the 164th Air Traffic Services Group at Yongsan, with elements located throughout the peninsula.
From its inception in 1965, the soldiers of the 17th Aviation Brigade performed with distinction in both peacetime and combat, while remaining as the “Cutting Edge” of freedom in the Republic. The 1st Battalion 52nd Aviation Regiment provided combat aviation support to US Forces Korea (USFK), ROK-US Combined Forces Command (CFC), and Eighth United States Army (EUSA) with UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters and C-12 Huron fixed wing aircraft. The 2nd Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment was the only unit in the Korean theater that provided medium lift support assets to USFK, CFC and EUSA, utilizing CH-47 Chinhook helicopters. The 164th Air Traffic Services Group provided air traffic services and Army Airspace Command and Control (A2C2) throughout the entire Korean theater in support of all Army aviation operations.
The Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 17th Aviation Brigade was first constituted on 1 December 1965 in the Regular Army as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 17th Aviation Group and activated on 15 December 1965 in Vietnam. It was inactivated following that conflict on 16 March 1973 at Oakland, California.
It was reactivated on 1 June 1975 in Korea. It was reorganized and redesignated on 17 October 1987 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 17th Aviation Brigade.
Once a division-centric organization, the US Army began transforming to a brigade-centric model in 1999 that enables it to increase the number of combat brigades from 33 to 43 or more by reallocating personnel and equipment. The 17th Aviation Brigade was subsequently inactivated on 16 June 2005. The transformation by Eighth Army units to modular organizations enhanced the capability to perform its deterrence mission in the Republic of Korea by making them more quickly deployable, flexible and lethal than had been previously structured.
