18th Medical Command (Theater)
“Pacific Knights”
The mission of the 18th Medical Command (Deployment Support) is to command and control assigned and attached medical units to provide comprehensive and flexible Army Health System Support (AHSS) throughout the US Army Pacific (USARPAC) and across the full spectrum of operations. The 18th Medical Command is the Medical Pacific Theatre Enabling Command (TEC) that provides the Command and Control, as well as medical expertise for the Army’s response to a wide variety of medical emergencies or humanitarian efforts. The 18th Medical Command is headquartered at Fort Shafter, Hawaii.
Prior to the relocation of the 18th Medical Command to Fort Shafter, Hawaii, its mission had been to serve as the strategic link to the CONUS medical base and plan/coordinate US Army medical support at the operational and tactical levels through the early stages of any potential conflict. The secondary mission was to provide theater level command and control of assigned and attached medical units conducting combat health support within the Korean theater. At that time, the 18th Medical Command had been headquartered in Yongsan with subordinate units located throughout Korea.
The 18th Medical Command (Deployment Support) was first constituted on 10 May 1967 in the Regular Army as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 18th Medical Brigade and activated on 18 August 1967 at Fort Lee, Virginia. The Brigade was inactivated on 16 December 1970 at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.
The unit was redesignated on 16 August 1984 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 18th Medical Command, and activated in Korea, an element of the Eighth United States Army. On 15 October 2008, as part of the restructuring of US forces in Korea, the 18th Medical Command was inactivated on the Korean peninsula and its personnel reflagged as the 65th Medical Brigade.
On 16 October 2008, the 18th Medical Command (Deployment Support) was activated on Fort Shafter, Hawaii as the Theatre Enabling Command for United States Army Pacific.
