602nd Aviation Support Battalion
“Heart of the Eagle”
The mission of the 602nd Aviation Support Battalion is to provide aviation and ground field maintenance, replenishment of all classes of supplies, and medical support for the Combat Aviation Brigade, and, on order, deploy to war in order to sustain the Combat Aviation Brigade during aviation operations. Prior to the transformation of the 2nd Infantry Division under the Army’s new modular force structure and the reorganization of US forces in Korea, the mission of the 602nd Aviation Support Battalion was to provide logistical support to the 2nd Infantry Division’s Aviation Brigade, but remained assigned to the Division Support Command (DISCOM).
The unit currently had maintenance support teams at Camp Eagle and K-16 Air Base, and as part of transformation to the modular force structure moved to Camp Humphreys in July 2005. The Aviation Support Battalion was the primary aviation logistics organization in the Aviation Unit of Employment. The Battalion provided both aviation and ground field maintenance, replenishment of all supplies and medical support in order to sustain the brigade.
Prior to the modular transforamtion, the 602nd Aviation Support Battalion Support Operations (SPO) section was designed to ensure that effective and efficient resources were applied to meet the needs to the 2nd Infantry Division’s Aviation Brigade and to 2 Air Defense and Field Artillery Batteries. The 602d Aviation Support Battalion SPO section had 4 operational areas to meet these requirements: Aviation Maintenance, Ground Maintenance, Fuel Operations, and General Supply Operations, and each section was filled by a MOS experienced qualified subject matter expert. The 602nd Aviation Support Battalion SPO section was located in Building S2339 at Camp Stanley, Korea.
The coat of arms was authorized on 21 September 1998. Buff is the primary color traditionally used by Support organizations. Blue represents the sky and black denotes solidity and consistency. The chevron symbolizes strength and support and its nebuly is derived from clouds recalling the sky and aviation. The two sections of the shield are interlocked to show teamwork and cooperation. The wing, upright and ready, echoes the Battalion’s motto, goals and mission for total military preparedness.
The 602nd Aviation Support Battalion had a long and proud heritage on the Korean peninsula supporting the 2nd Infantry Division. It traces its history to the constitution on 1 September 1977 in the Regular Army as Company C, 2nd Aviation Battalion and then redesignated on 16 September 1988 as Company C, 2nd Aviation Regiment. On 16 September 1999, the 602nd Aviation Support Battalion was activated at Camp Stanley in support of the 3 battalions in the 2nd Aviation Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division.
The Eighth United States Army’s Multi-Functional Aviation Brigade (MFAB) was officially formed on 16 June 2005, as the 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division As part of this activation, a product of the reorganization of US forces in Korea, and the transformation of the 2nd Infantry Division as a whole to the US Army’s new modular force structure, the 602nd Aviation Support Battalion was reassigned to the 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade. It had previously been assigned to the Division Support Command, and its elements attached only during operations to those units it habitually supported.
