102nd Military Intelligence Battalion
“Stalker”
The 102nd Military Intelligence Battalion was inactivated on 22 June 2005 as part of the transformation of the 2nd Infantry Division to the US Army’s modular force structure. Personnel from the Battalion were used in part to help activate the 2nd Infantry Division Special Troops Battalion.

The 102nd Military Intelligence Battalion provided combat intelligence and electronic support to the Warriors of the 2nd Infantry Division. This support consisted of ground surveillance, force protection, interrogation of prisoners of war, electronic support and electronic attack assets. A unique aspect of the mission was the fact that US Army and Korean soldiers lived and served together in all the Battalion’s companies.

The 102nd Military Intelligence Battalion was first constituted on 16 September 1981 in the Regular Army as the 102nd Military Intelligence Battalion. It was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division and activated in Korea. The 329th Army Security Agency Company and the 2nd Military Intelligence Company were reorganized and redesignated as Companies A and B respectively.

The 329th Army Security Agency Company was first constituted on 23 October 1943 in the Army of the United States as the 3106th Signal Service Platoon and activated on 1 November 1943 at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. This unit was inactivated on 10 February 1946 on Okinawa. It was reactivated on 19 November 1946 at Vint Hill Farms Station, Virginia and redesignated on 1 April 1947 as the 3rd Signal Service Platoon. It was again reorganized and redesignated on 25 March 1949 as the 53rd Signal Service Company and allotted on 13 October 1950 to the Regular Army. The unit was converted and redesignated on 1 December 1950 as the 329th Communication Reconnaissance Company. It was reorganized and redesignated on 25 June 1955 as Company B, 301st Communication Reconnaissance Battalion and redesignated on 1 July 1956 as Company B, 301st Army Security Agency Battalion. This unit wa inactivated on 15 October 1957 in Korea. It was redesignated on 1 November 1975 as the 329th Army Security Agency Company and activated in Korea, before being inactivated in September 1981 to become part of the 102nd Military Intelligence Battalion.

The 2nd Military Intelligence Company was first constituted on 12 July 1944 in the Army of the United States as the 2nd Counter Intelligence Corps Detachment. The unit was activated on 6 August 1944 in France with personnel from provisional Counter Intelligence Corps detachment attached to the 2nd Infantry Division and allotted on 3 February 1949 to the Regular Army. The unit was inactivated on 15 September 1956 at Fort Lewis, Washington. It was redesignated 26 February 1958 as the 2nd Military Intelligence Detachment and activated on 14 June 1958 at Fort Benning, Georgia. The unit was assigned on 30 June 1976 to the 2d Infantry Division. It was reorganized and redesignated on 20 February 1979 as the 2nd Military Intelligence Company, before being redesignated as part of the 102nd Military intelligence Battalion in September 1981.

The tensions between the Republic of Korea and North Korea meant that the 102nd Military Intelligence Battalion maintained a high operational tempo throughout the year. The Battalion participates in combat team drills with maneuver companies and battalions, brigade and division field and command post exercises, and Eighth US Army combined command post exercises. In a mission unique to the Battalion, soldiers of the ground surveillance platoons provided continuous early warning detection support to the Joint Security Area Battalion, which represented the United Nations Command at Panmunjon. As the only tactical military intelligence Battalion the Korea peninsula, the 102nd Military Intelligence Battalion was often called upon to conduct combined field operations with its sister units in the Republic of Korea Army.

In June 2005, the 102nd Military Intelligence Battalion was inactivated as part of the transformation of the 2nd Infanty Division to the US Army’s new modular force structure and the restructuring of US Forces in Korea. Some of its personnel were reflagged as part of the subsequently activated 2nd Infantry Division Special Troops Battalion.
