031207-N-3363H-001 Atlantic Ocean (Dec. 7, 2003) — Photographer’s Mates from the “Pukin’ Dogs” of Fighter Squadron One Four Three (VF-143), transport a Tactical Air Reconnaissance Pod System (TARPS) across the flight deck aboard USS George Washington (CVN 73). The TARPS pod houses two sensors: A two-position (vertical and forward oblique) KS-87 frame camera, and either the KA-99 low altitude panoramic camera or the KS-153 panoramic camera. Together, these sensors make the pod a very effective low-to-medium altitude reconnaissance system, and is carried by the F-14 Tomcat. The Norfolk, Va.-based nuclear powered aircraft carrier is conducting Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) in preparation for an upcoming six-month deployment.
