Kaiserslautern is located in the German State of Rheinland-Pfalz which lies in the southwest part of the country. The Rheinland-Pfalz borders on France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the German States of Saarland, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Hessen and Baden-Wurttemberg. The Kaiserslautern Military Community (KMC) is unique because it is the largest overseas military community and it is a combined branch (Army-Air Force) Community.
LOCATION: Kaiserslautern, Germany is 80 miles southwest of Frankfurt, Germany and 295 miles northeast of Paris, France. The city lies in the Rhineland-Pfalz State of Germany and is a crossroads to many parts of Europe.
EUROPEAN COMMAND: US ARMY EUROPE (USAREUR) Mission: Peacetime Missions – * Command Assigned US Army Forces in Theater * Deter aggression by maintaining combat ready, forward deployed ground combat forces. * Maintain capability, in conjunction with host nations, to receive and support reinforcing forces entering theater. * Plan for and execute contingency missions as directed. * Ensure adequate living and working conditions for soldiers, civilians, and their families.
Wartime Missions – * Command assigned US forces in theater. * Coordinate expansion and operation of wartime lines of communication. * Receive and process reinforcing forces and equipment. * Provide logistical support to US Army Forces in theater.
MAJOR COMMAND: 21st Theater Support Command (TSC) Mission: The mission of the 21st Theater Support Command is to provide logistical and supply support to all elements within the European Theater of Operations. The mission of the 29th Area Support Group is to provide for the storage and issue of this support.
KAISERSLAUTERN POPULATION ASSIGNED/SERVED: 38,579 Military Members, Dependents and DOD Civilians.
HISTORY OF THE MILITARY COMMUNITY: Kaiserslautern is the largest military community outside the continental United States. We are a combined community consisting of Army and Air Force components. The Kaiserslautern Military Community (KMC) consists of Army facilities at Kleber, Panzer, and Daenner Kaserne, Vogelweh, Landstuhl, Miesau, Pirmasens, Rhine Ordnance and Pulaski Barracks along with Air Force facilities located at Ramstein Air Base, Einsiedlerhof, Sembach and Kapaun Air Station.
Kaiserslautern is also the home of the 21st TSC which is the largest forward-deployed logistical command in the United States Army. Comprised of seven major subordinate command, the 21st TSC carries out multiple missions within the entire European theater: direct and general maintenance and supply; total distribution, storage and maintenance of propositioned mater; military police support; movements control and material management for the theater. With the hard work that accompanies their vast array of mission, soldiers of the 21st find welcome relaxation in their adopted home of Kaiserslautern.

-Germany is a member of the European Union, situated right in the heart of Europe. Germany has nine neighboring countries that are all within driving distance: Denmark in the north, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg and France in the west, Switzerland and Austria in the south, and the Czech Republic and Poland in the east. Germany is laced with a variety of landscapes. The Alps lie in the south, and dry sandy lowlands in the north. Rivers and lakes are scattered throughout the entire country.
-The KMC is located in the federal state of Rheinland-Pfalz in the southwest corner of the country. This area is the main wine-growing region for Germany and also known for the largest connected forest, the Palatinate Forest.
-K-Town as some call it, is known for being the largest American community outside of the U.S. Over 43,000 Americans share this community with inhabitants from over 70 nations. The city’s historical past has been preserved even though it has grown to become one of the largest industrial and marketing cities in Germany.
-Ramstein, Kapaun, and Sembach, are predominately Air Force communities, which share their services with the other military members of the KMC. Vogelweh, Kleber, Panzer, Daenner, Miesau, Pirmasens, Rhein Ordnance Barracks and Landstuhl, the Army’s Regional Medical Community, all make up this great community.
-The host unit at Ramstein Air Base has been the 86th Airlift Wing (AW) since 1 May 1991 after the inactivation of the 316th Air Division and 377th Combat Support Wing.

469th Air Base Group
-Ramstein’s largest flight-line tenant organization, Air Mobility Command’s 621st Air Mobility Support Group, provides Air Mobility Command cargo and maintenance support for Ramstein. Its 623rd Air Mobility Support Squadron, AMC’s largest overseas cargo port, moves incoming and outgoing cargo via C-5, C-141, C-130, and C-17 aircraft. They also handle a variety of civilian contract carriers. The squadron has sole responsibility for providing en- route, selected home-based aircraft, and scheduled and unscheduled maintenance.
